International -- Initiated by European architects--such as Mies van der Rohe--in the early 20th century, this is the style that introduced the idea of exposed functional building elements, such as elevator shafts, ground-to-ceiling plate glass windows, and smooth facades.

The style was molded from modern materials--concrete, glass, and steel--and is characterized by an absence of decoration. A steel skeleton typically supports these homes. Meanwhile, interior and exterior walls merely act as design and layout elements, and often feature dramatic, but nonsupporting projecting beams and columns. With its avant-garde elements, naturally the style appeared primarily in the East and in California.

Savoye House, Poissy, Fr., an International Style residence by Le Corbusier, 1929–30

international8.jpgInternational architectural style that developed in Europe and the United States in the 1920s and '30s and became the dominant tendency in Western architecture during the middle decades of the 20th century.

The term was first used in 1932 by Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson in their essay The International Style: Architecture Since 1922. The style's most common characteristics are rectilinear forms, open interior spaces, large expanses of glass, steel, and reinforced-concrete construction, and light, taut plane surfaces devoid of applied ornamentation. Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier are among the architects most clearly associated with the style.

The residence of the Swiss ambassador in Washington, DC in the US has been awarded the prestigious International Architecture Award 2007 by RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects. The building was designed by American architect Steven Holl and  Lucern-based Swiss architect Justin Rüssli. The award notes that the building, in the form of a Swiss cross, is more than a private home and serves as a cultural centre that reflects Swiss cultural values. It also lives up to Swiss environmental protection standards.
