2008

All those in favor of more spam
raise your hand...
Is
it just me or have you too noticed
an increased amount of spam? I used to
get a few hundred emails a day, mostly
spam. Now it seems like double that. If
these scoundrels are not promising everyone to get
rich, they want to educate us as health
care professionals... online. I can see it
now. I walk into a doctor's office and the
assistant says something like "Our OLMBD" will be with
you shortly."
I
say, "OLMBD?"
"Yes. Our
On Line Make Believe Doctor. Don't worry
if anything goes wrong we'll call 911."
Then
there are those pesky phone calls. This past week I
tried to keep count of the
solicitor calls. Foget about it. Lost
count somewhere around fifty. A
friend who is also bombarded with telemarketer calls,
live and recorded, suggested I remind everyone to
register your home phone number at the
Do
Not Call
Registry site.
Now
that I got that off my chest, we can move on to more
important things. Thanksgiving.
I am already
imagining how good that day is going to
be. We'll be at my son
and daughter-in-law's. She is a fabulous
cook and my youngest granddaughter has taken up pie
baking. At eleven years old she makes a
blue-ribbon-worthy-pumpkin-pie. And my daughter
makes a killer-cranberry-sauce, which she could bottle
and sell if she were so inclined. Yes, it's going
to be a good Thanksgiving.
We
have our Thanksgiving page open now.

retail stores, The Home Depot Inc. announced Thursday
that it is shuttering 15 of them amid a slumping
U.S. economy and housing market. The move will affect
1,300 employees. It is the first time the world's
largest home improvement store chain has ever closed a
flagship store for performance reasons. Its shares rose
almost 5 percent. The Atlanta-based company said
the under performing U.S. stores being closed
represents less than 1 percent of its existing stores.
They will be shuttered within the next two months.
J. C. Penney, Lowe's and
Office Depot are scaling back.

Goodbye Levitz - closed already. The
furniture retailer, which is going out of business.
Levitz first announced it was going out of business and
closing all 76 of its stores in December. The retailer
dates back to 1910 when Richard Levitz opened his first
furniture store in Lebanon, PA. In the
1960's, the warehouse/showroom concept brought Levitz to
the forefront of the furniture industry. The local
Levitz closures will follow the shutdown of Bombay

Gift retailer Lillian Vernon, based
in Virginia Beach, Va., said it will
evaluate whether to sell itself.
Linens ‘N Things - Earlier this
week, Linens 'N Things backed out of restructuring plans
that included some store closures and decided to shut
its remaining 371 stores in 48 states.
Macy's - 9 stores
Mervyns - Mervyns, the 59-year-old
department store chain based in Hayward , is
closing up shop. The ailing retailer, which filed
for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July and planned
to close 26 stores, said Friday it now plans to
liquidate its remaining 149 locations and shutter the
business after the holiday season. "We are
disappointed with this outcome but the company's
declining liquidity position and the extremely
challenging retail environment, together with the fact
that we have exhausted all other possibilities, requires
that we take this action," said John Goodman, Mervyns'
chief executive, in a statement.
Movie Gallery - 160 stores as part

its 184 stores are closing. The retailer will still
operate 94 stores to pay off debts, but 90 of these
stores have performed poorly and also may close.
Shoe Pavilion Inc.,
Sprint Nextel - 125 retail
locations. New Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse appears to
have inherited a company bleeding subscribers by the
thousands, and will now officially be dropping the ax on
4,000 employees and 125 retail locations. Amid the loss
of 639,000 postpaid customers in the fourth quarter
Sprint will be cutting a total of 6.7% of its work force
(following the 5 000 layoffs last year) and 8% of
company-owned brick-and-mortar stores, while remaining
mute on other rumors that it will consolidate its
headquarters in Kansas . Sprint Nextel shares are down
$2.89, or nearly 25%, at the time of this writing.
Steve & Barry's Earlier this
month, Steve & Barry's LLC, once a growing force in
low-priced fashion, filed for Chapter 11. Steve
& Barry's, which has 276 stores in 39 states, tossed
itself into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the latest
victim of a steep downturn in the retail sector and
tighter credit markets. Mall owners have delayed
reimbursing the discount fashion chain for store-opening
expenses, further constricting its cash flow, the
company said
Talbot's, J. Jill closing stores.
About a month ago, Talbot's announced that it will be
shuttering all 78 of its kids and men's stores. Now
the company says it will close another 22 under
performing stores.. The 22 stores will be a mix of
Talbot's women's and J. Jill , another chain it
owns The closures will occur this fiscal year,
according to a company press release.
Wickes is going out of business.

customers, filed for bankruptcy protection last month.

previously said it plans to close 82 stores by July 31.
Today, it announced that it is closing another 23 under
performing stores. The company said it's not providing a
list of specific store closures. Of the 105 locations
planned for closure, 50 are kiosks and 55 are
stores. |

Black
Friday ~ Thanks to Ms. Linda Jo

These are tough economic times, so
retailers are launching their Black Friday specials
weeks early to motivate budget-conscious buyers. You can
normally find the latest Black Friday ads on sites
like BlackFriday.info, Bargainist.com, DealTaker.com, BFads.net,
and TheBlackfriday.com, so check those out before you go shopping
this weekend, because it looks like retailers are
slashing prices early this year.
If you go to the stores on Black Friday
and find that an item you were looking for is sold out,
there might still be a chance to get it. Throughout
Black Friday and right through the weekend, many Black
Friday items that are sold out in the stores will still
be available to purchase online. Just like last year, we
will have a real-time tracking system so you can easily
see what Black Friday products are available to purchase
online. Then, starting on Cyber Monday, we'll be posting
a ton of deals from online merchants like Overstock.com, BestBuy.com, and Walmart.com.

Green Tip:
CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE'S
COILS Cleaning the back of
your refridgerator--the coils and electric
circuitry--increases energy efficiency. A refrigerator
with dirty coils works harder, and that means an extra
25 percent more energy use and CO2 emissions as compared
with a fridge with clean coils.

This was a headline I just
hated to read

Pete Wilson, long-time Bay Area
television journalist and radio personality, dies at
62
July 21, 2007 -- Veteran KGO-TV, ABC7 News
Anchor Pete Wilson died last night at
Stanford
Hospital in
Palo
Alto from a massive heart attack
suffered during hip replacement
surgery.
Why,
more than a year later should we remember Pete? He
had a keen outlook on life that I found
inspiring. Pete had his own unique way of helping
viewers visualize a problem or solution with his precise
use of language.
Pete
Wilson: "So consider this -- if a neighborhood declines
one organ at a time, one storefront, one flaking paint
job at a time -- why can't the opposite be true?"
I
used to stay up for the 11 O'clock news just to hear
what Pete would report from his "Circular File." I
sure missed that little segment. Pete was also an
accomplished artist. Those who knew
him said he was down to earth and helpful to
everyone. I never had the privilege of meeting him
in person, but I connected with many of his
philosophies.
Two
things I learned from Pete's death.
Regardless
of what the surgeon says, insist on
having tests to determine if you have any
blockages in your arteries BEFORE having
surgery. Some of us are walking time-bombs and
don't know it until it's too late, but could have been
avoided.
And,
look around to see what you can do as an individual to
make your neighborhood a little better whether that be
in helping someone or making an area look
better. If that is too ambitious for you, start
with your own home. Spruce up the outside, plant
flowers or ornamental grasses, freshen up the paint,
add landscape lighting, etc. to make your home say
"I'm proud to live here. And I want you to be
proud to have me as your
neighbor."
In
July 2008 the First Pete Wilson Scholarship
was awarded. The Pete Wilson journalism
scholarship was created by ABC7 in honor
of Pete.

Rednecks at it again ~ Thanks to Mr.
Jim Knudsen
An Alabama couple, both bona fide
rednecks, had 9 children. They went to the doctor to
see about getting the husband ''fixed." The doctor
gladly started the required procedure and asked them
what finally made them make the decision--why after
nine children, would they choose to
do this.
The husband replied
that they had read in a recent article that one out
of every ten children being born in the United States
was Mexican, and they didn't want to take a chance on
having a Mexican baby because neither of them could
speak Spanish.

Never tick off a
nurse ~ Thanks to Mr. Jim Knudsen
A big shot attorney had to spend a couple of days in
the hospital. He was a royal pain to the
nurses because he bossed them around just like he
did his staff. None of the hospital staff wanted to
have anything to do with him. The head nurse
was the only one who could stand up to him. She
came into his room and announced, "I have to take
your temperature."
After complaining for
several minutes, he finally settled down,
crossed his arms and opened his mouth.
"No,
I'm sorry," the nurse stated, "for this reading, I
can't use an oral thermometer."
This started
another round of complaining, but eventually he
rolled over and bared his behind. After feeling the
nurse insert the thermometer, he heard her
announce, "I have to get something. Now you
stay JUST LIKE THAT until I get
back!"
She leaves the door to his room open on
her way out. He curses under his breath as he
hears people walking past his door, laughing.
After a half hour, the man's doctor comes into the
room.
"What's going on here?" asked the
doctor. Angrily, the man answers, "What's
the matter, Doc? Haven't you ever seen someone
having their temperature taken?"
After a pause,
the doctor confesses, "Not with a carnation."

What have we learned
in 2 millennia? ~ Thanks to Mr. Jim Knudsen
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury
should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the
arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and
controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should
be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must
again learn to work, instead of living on public
assistance." -- Cicero - 55

November 19, 2008
- Google has opened an online photo gallery that will
feature millions of images from Life magazine's
archives that have never been seen by the public
before.
The new service, available at
Google hosts
Life, debuted on Tuesday with about 2
million photos. Eventually, Google plans to scan all 10
million photos from Life's library so they can be
viewed on any computer with an internet
connection.
About 97 percent of Life's
archives have not been publicly seen, according to
Life.
The photos can be printed out
for free as long as they aren't being used as part of an
attempt to make money. Time Warner, Life's parent
company, hopes to make money by selling high-resolution,
framed prints.
Life's archives
include photos from the Civil War as well as some of the
most memorable moments from the 20th century, including
the Zapruder film capturing John F. Kennedy's
assassination.
Google has been indexing a
wide variety of information that previously wasn't
available online as part of its efforts to lure even
more traffic to its popular search engine. For the past
four years, Google has been scanning millions of books
stored in dozens of libraries around the
world.
The Life partnership
represents Google's biggest undertaking in professional
photography. Google hopes to work out similar
arrangements with the owners of other large photo
archives, said R.J. Pittman, a director of product
management.
